Spam? I was getting over 2,000
emails a day!
How will you deal with spam? There are four basic
methods:
Filters. Spam Assassin and most spam "filters"
examine every email and look for words, patterns, and other
identifying characteristics to identify and trash or mark spam.
The trick? It's hard to identify spam. Spammers have figured
out a lot of ways to spell Viagra. Usually, you can build a
whitelist to indicate senders whose mail should get
through.
Senders. Some spam systems, like SpamCop and
SpamHaus, block senders by IP address when an IP address is
identified with spam. An IP address is usually blocked for only
24 hours, since spammers try to hijack servers, send their
spammail, then move on (because the ISP shuts them down
quickly). The trick here? They may block an IP that belongs to
someone whose mail you want to receive, since a single IP
address often serves thousands of mailers.
Challenge-Response. This type of system builds
a whitelist of approved mailers (the "from address"), and lets
mail from them through. Mail that comes from someone gets an
instant reply, requesting the sender go to a web address and
type in a code to get added to the whitelist. The theory is
that spammers don't check or answer their own email. (They
usually are not on the whitelist, because they forged a return
address anyway.) The best service of this type is SpamArrest.
The catch? Some good mail may get blocked from vendors or
others who don't handle the challenge email very well.

An online provider: Gmail. Here's the system I
use, a Google service called Gmail. Gmail is great at filtering
out spam. And it's free! Yes, you can get a gmail address, but
for business, it gets better. Have gmail go "pick up" your mail
from your regular POP3 email account. This way you continue to
get mail at your business email address, but you "view" it
through Gmail. You can set Gmail to send mail with your own
from (reply-to) address. Gmail

FTP Software to Transfer files to
your Website*
Generally, it's a good idea to have some FTP software ready
to copy files up to your website's server computer, and,
occasionally, to copy some back to your computer. That means
you need an "FTP" program ... just think "File Transfer
Program." (The techies will tell you that's not what it means,
but it's close, and it makes more sense.) Requires a web
hosting account. An 'online' solution.
Net2FTP. You can upload other files from
your computer to your website using an online service like
Net2FTP.
FTP Transfer for Windows and
Mac. FileZilla, Open Source, free.
Contribution recommended. I suggest about $30. Download it to
your desktop, then install from there: FileZilla
Software to Edit Web
Pages*
When you need to create a webpage with HTML (that's code for
"web page") you can buy expensive programs like Dreamweaver,
GoLive, or (heaven forbid), FrontPage, but we've found a great
little program. XSitePro was designed for internet
marketers. This is ideal for websites where you can't use
Killer Sales Letter! Yes, it has a learning curve, but much
easier than those other programs. *Requires a web hosting
account.

Create and Edit MP3 Audio
Files. If you want to add sound to your
website, it’s a good idea to record and edit those files
to eliminate mistakes, dead spots, etc, and to optimize
the audio with amplification and compression. It makes it
sound better. We like Audacity, partly because it's free!
Record top-quality MP3s with a broadcast grade recorder. We
suggest these:
These are great for field interviews. The Edirol is smaller,
the Tascam and the Olympus are newer. The Zoom H4 accepts full
XLR pro microphone connections. The Zoom H2 plug-in inputs are
weak but the built in microphones are great. (These were
designed for professional quality recording and will record
hours and hours of quality audio on SD and SDHC high capacity
cards.) You'll save a bundle at zZounds, a great source for all kinds of
pro audio, editing tools, and musical instruments. Add a
professional microphone (also from zZounds), or use the
built in mics.

Okay, you've got an MP3 file, how
do you get it on your Website?
Here are three slick tools for getting audio on your
website.
Instant Audio. By far the easiest way to
get audio on your website is Instant Audio. You don't even need
a microphone! You can phone in your audio, record it from a
microphone on your computer, or upload an MP3 file. With
Instant Audio, it's easy to keep track of your audio clips, and
putting them on your website is super easy: Instant Audio

help you get the audio presented in a way that everyone can

Even if you already have a Flash audio tool to post your
audio, or to make podcasts, you need to optimize the Mp3 file.
You'd be surprised how many people get this wrong. MP3 Tweak is
the answer, a remarkably simple utility to use, it takes an MP3
or WAV audio file and converts it to an MP3 "tweaked" for the
right blend of high quality and small file size. This tool

One Visit From The Feds and

Professional graphic artists all know that the best software

Printing Books with Real POD

Are you qualified?
As simple as all this software is to run, I must admit that
it’s not right for everyone. Some basic computer skills are
needed before you undertake managing your own website. Take
this simple test:
- Can you handle email? Can you
send and receive email without constantly running into big
problems?
- Can you use a word processor? You
know: Can you highlight and boldface a few words? Can you
highlight, copy and paste some text from one place to
another?
- Have you ever ordered anything
online? Even if you didn’t buy anything, have
you successfully requested a special report or signed up
for a newsletter?
- Have you been able to set up a userid and
password somewhere? Have you been successful
in getting back in to that website or program?
- Can you copy files from one folder to
another? You know, when you grab files in a
folder and drag them to another, or you highlight, copy and
paste files from one folder to another. Yeah, like
that!
If you can answer “Yes” to all five questions, you can run
your own website.
If you’ve answered ’no’ to any of the above, or you are
uncertain about your answers, we recommend Video

teach you what you need… get a little practice, then come
